The History and Evolution of Microdermabrasion
One of the most popular and profitable treatments ever introduced to the Spa Market, Microdermabrasion has been the gold standard of exfoliation for estheticians over the past 20+ years. Highly effective and relatively inexpensive to operate, microdermabrasion machines continue to serve as solid profit centers for all types of spas. However, through the years, the technology has slowly evolved and become increasingly more user-friendly, yet still results-driven. The first microdermabrasion units utilized aluminum oxide crystals, which were very effective. Over time, we witnessed the introduction of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and salt crystals. The main challenge with all crystal-based units was clogging—especially in humid climates and rooms that utilize a facial steamer. To alleviate these issues, machines were soon equipped with “Anti-Clog” cycles or “Dehumidification” systems. While effective, the measures still were far from fool-proof.

“Crystal Free” microdermabrasion units then emerged—with machines featuring abrasive or “Diamond Tips”, yet still utilizing the vacuum element of traditional microdermabrasion. From there, companies began trying to differentiate their machines by adding liquid elements or saline washes. The main challenge with these units to the end user was high consumables costs and extensive maintenance. Next came vibrating units with abrasive paddles that operated much like a sander on the skin’s surface. This technology was a positive step in the right direction since it eliminated the vacuum element (which is often viewed as too harsh for the skin). Last year, CACI International introduced a patented Orbital Microdermabrasion technology, which rotates between 1,000 and 4,000 RPM’s, utilizes 3 grades of silica carbide tips, and also integrates Red and Blue LED Light treatment to calm and purify the skin.
Most recently, we’ve seen the rise of Ultrasonic technology in skin care. From at-home cleansing units to professional use machines. In Europe and Asia, this modality has all but replaced traditional crystal and other abrasive modalities. As a company, we now feature only Ultrasonic and vacuum-free units that incorporate the patented Orbital system we discussed in the previous paragraph. As a company, Ageless Esthetics brought some of the first microdermabrasion units into the United States back in the early 1990’s. Since then, we’ve watched the evolution of the technology, and have adjusted to where we believe the market is going. This is not to say that the more traditional units are still not viable by any means. We simply have our eye on the future.
